James and John were seeking some of the highest of high callings. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized: But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared. Mark 10:39, 40 And they said unto him, We can. While Jesus told James and John that they would indeed answer their call, He told them that being on His right and left hand was not His to give When Jesus replies Ye know not what ye ask, He is not speaking only to them, and it is not recorded only as a historical event, but He is speaking to everyone who would desire to be used of God: there is a call to answer, a preparation to make, and a price to pay (if you will) to be used of God. While this would be a position of great honor, it is also a position of action, of authority, and of being used of Jesus. The mother of James and John had asked Jesus that her sons sit on His right and left hand in His kingdom. Mark 10:3 8 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? Let us narrow our scope further, and continue by seeking the spiritual depth and emphasis then, of our drinking of His cup: However, know that every scripture given in the Bible, The Word of God, has spiritual purpose if we can find it. There is a spiritual promise to each of us confirming the spiritual light and vision that Jesus gives being not only with us, but in us, by us, through us, and for us, if we will fully accept Him! Oh, the volumes that should be written of this Light! There is no way anyone could read or write everything that should be written of Jesus, or absorb everything that is the will and purpose of Almighty God, so God has not tasked us with that. When Jesus told Nathanael that thou shalt see greater things than these ( John 1:50, 51), He was not speaking only of physical sight, but could tell him ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. Regardless of whether they ever see, feel, comprehend, or accept that Light, the Light is shining in the darkness of every man. Verse 9 says … which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. Narrow our scope then to consider only that Jesus is the Light (capitalized in John 1:7 – 9). From these few terms only we can know Jesus is omnipresent, so we can readily acknowledge that what John said is true God is everywhere and in everything, and to fully expound His omnipotence and omniscience would be impossible for us: but we must extoll and proclaim Him to the world! In John 14:6 He is also the way, the truth, and the life. The Bible describes Jesus with so many descriptive terms: in John 1:1 – 5 alone He is the Word, God, the creator, life, and the light of men. John 21:25 says that if all the things Jesus did were written, the world itself could not contain the books that should be written.
